Bio Safety Cabinets

The term biological safety cabinet is used to describe a variety of containment devices equipped with HEPA filters, which are designed to provide personnel protection or both personnel and product protection from the hazards of handling infectious materials. The cabinets are defined by class and again by type based on their construction, airflow velocities and patterns, and their exhaust system.

The cabinets are defined by class and again by type based on their construction, airflow velocities and patterns, and their exhaust system.

The biological safety cabinet class I provides personnel and environmental protection, but no product protection. It has a limited fixed work access opening and the exhaust air is HEPA filtered, to protect the environment. The biosafety cabinet class I is designed for general microbial research with low-and moderate-risk agents.

Class IIA Biohazard Safety Cabinets provide personnel, product, and environment protection. Class II Cabinets differ in the proportion as 70% air is re-circulated within the cabinet through high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration.

The biological safety cabinet class III is designed for work with bio safety level 4 microbiological agents, and provides maximum protection to the environment and the worker. It is a gas-tight enclosure with a non-opening, completely sealed, viewing window. Access to the interior of the cabinet is through a double-door pass-through interchange box that can be decontaminated between uses.

Operating in cramped conditions can make even the simplest procedure not just difficult and time-consuming – but often hazardous.   • Ambient air is pulled through the perforations located towards the work zone front to prevent contamination of the work surface and product. The inflow does not mix with the clean air within the cabinet work zone. Inflow air travels through a return path toward the air plenum at the top of the cabinet.
  • The uniform, non-turbulent air stream avoids cross contamination within and throughout the work area.
  • The down flow air stream splits with a portion moving towards the front air grille, and the remainder moving to the rear air grille. A small portion of the filtered down flow enters the intake perforations at the side capture zones at a higher velocity.
  • A combination of inflow and down flow air streams forms an air barrier that prevents contaminated room air from entering the work zone, and prevents work surface emissions from escaping the work zone.
  • Air returns to the common air plenum where @ 32% exhaust and @ 68% recirculation process is continued.
